After the bloodbath this afternoon when NBC cancelled a half-dozen shows, the network finished the day on a upbeat note, handing out renewals to freshman The Mysteries of Laura and sophomores Undateable and The Night Shift. The Mysteries of Laura is the only NBC freshman series to land a second season pickup. I hear the renewal is for 13 episodes.
The comedy-drama series hails from Warner Bros. TV, and I hear its renewal was negotiated in conjunction with the Season 2 pickup of Undateable as a live comedy series.
The Mysteries of Laura, which served as a Wednesday 8 PM anchor, was a modest but steady and reliable ratings performer with no lead-in and very little promotion.
Developed by Jeff Rake based on a Spanish format, The Mysteries of Laura stars Debra Messing as a brilliant and messy detective and single mother of twins. Rake executive produces with Aaron Kaplan of Kapital Entertainment, Greg Berlanti and Sarah Schechter of Berlanti Television, McG of Wonderland and Todd Lituchy.
