“The course of your lives will determine the course of humanity — into light or darkness.” Pretty heavy burden to assign a pack of youngsters, but that’s how it goes in this first trailer for Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials. Teen Wolf star Dylan O’Brien, Kaya Scodelario and company are back for another run through the postapocalyptic dystopian future world adapted from James Dashner’s YA books. This time, Thomas leads the Gladers through a maze as they attempt to topple WCKD, the powerful secret organization that has frightening plans for them. Thomas Brodie-Sangster and Patricia Clarkson also reprise their roles for the action sequel, joined by franchise newcomer Lili Taylor.
Wes Ball is back in the director’s chair, with T.S. Nowlin returning as screenwriter. The original was a breakout hit last year, digging up $340 million worldwide including $102 million domestically. That success spawned Scorch Trials and a second sequel, The Death Cure, which is set for 2017. For now, though, 20th Century Fox opens the new pic September 18. Have a look.
