2nd UPDATE, Monday, 12:07 PM: Final grosses have come in for Warner Bros. for Mad Max: Fury Road: It ended its first weekend internationally a little under from the Sunday estimate with $64M. Universal Pictures’ Pitch Perfect 2, the No. 1 picture in the states with $69.2M, brought in $27.1M from 29 markets. Disney/Marvel for its superhero megahit Avengers: Age of Ultron just keeps climbing past the $1B mark. Disney also reported for its animated Cinderella and Fox reported on three films: Far from the Madding Crowd, DreamWorks Animated’s Home and The Longest Ride. Universal also reported final tallies for its megahit Furious 7 and its horror flicks Unfriended and Ouija. Final grosses are now in for the sci-fi film Ex Machina and Russell Crowe’s The Water Diviner. Still awaiting final numbers from Sony on Paul Blart Mall Cop 2.

1st UPDATE, WRITETHRU, Sunday, 12:43 PM PST: International weekend estimates are now in from Warner Bros/Village Roadshow’s Mad Max: Fury Road the major new offshore entrant. The critically lauded pic grossed a revised $64M in 68 overseas markets for a global total of $109.4M; it performed especially well in action-loving bases and is expected to have long legs. The worldwide booty makes Fury Road George Miller’s best opening ever and positions it atop the franchise as the biggest grosser ever in the series. There were No. 1s in 40 territories. And Max also helped make Warner the latest studio to join the $1B international box office club this year.
Fury Road roared out of the gate on Thursday at the same time it was premiering here at the Cannes Film Festival. There were over 9.1M admissions on nearly 16,900 screens across the session which lost a day it would normally have had given the Cannes event. Many markets like France typically bow on a Wednesday, but the film was held back to coincide with the red carpet, beginning its shows at 2 PM on Thursday.
Benefitting in part from the enhanced media coverage, MMFR had its biggest bow in France at a lower than expected $6.1M (down from $6.8M) on 802 screens for 30% of the market and the No. 1 slot. Tom Hardy and Charlize Theron’s next best play was the UK with a better than estimated $7M (up from $6.7M) on 950 screens. Although it was bested there by Pitch Perfect 2, whose rating was less restrictive, Max landed the biggest IMAX opening ever for an R-rated pic with $935K. The rest of the Top 5 were all strong starts. Korea scored $6.6M on 799 screens for a 39% share and No. 1. Fury Road captured $764K in its 15 IMAX plays, also an R-rated record.
Further in Korea, the film bested local opener Chronicles Of Evil which took $6.3M. Miller’s return to a post-apocalyptic future was No. 1 and worth $5.6M in Russia, one of the markets most affected by the currency crisis. It was playing on 2,434 screens with a massive 75% share of the Top 5 films. Miller took the hometown advantage in Australia for $4.9M from 542 screens — another No. 1 bow, battling day by day with Pitch Perfect 2 (in its second) weekend there.
Fury Road also ranked No. 1 in the United Arabs Emirates with a whopping $1.4M on only 80 screens for a per screen average of $17,500. In Spain, the actioner pulled in $1.2M from 476 screens for a No. 1 ranking there. It also took the top spot in Italy with $1.2M from 555 screens and the No. 1 spot in Thailand with $1.2M from 440 screens. It will next release on June 20th in Japan.
After blasting off in China last Tuesday, Avengers: Age Of Ultron packed houses to a six-day final of $154.1M. It’s the best Middle Kingdom debut ever for Disney/Marvel; the 2nd best Friday/Saturday/Sunday of all time there after Transformers: Age Of Extinction last summer; and the 2nd best six-day start after Furious 7. Just shy of its first week, Ultron has already become China’s No. 8 industry release ever. In total from 91 territories, Ultron added a better than estimated $191.4M (up from $185M) internationally to raise its offshore tally to $775.9M and a global cume of $1.147.9B, making it the 8th highest-grossing film of all time. What’s more, that now gives Disney bragging rights to four of the Top 8 films ever.
Via its IMAX plays, Ultron added $22M worldwide in the frame with $17.5M of that from China. That crushed Transformers: Age Of Extinction’s previous $9.75M record.
Elsewhere, Ultron is now the biggest Disney/Marvel release and the No. 2 biggest Western film ever in Korea. It shares that distinction in other markets including Hong Kong, Malaysia and Vietnam. The Top 5 overseas homes for Ultron are now China ($154.1M), Korea ($78.9M), the UK ($65.9M), and much better than expected grosses in Mexico ($45.4M) and Brazil ($42.4M). Japan releases on July 4.
Following last weekend’s early rollout of Pitch Perfect 2 in Australia and New Zealand, Universal added 27 more territories this frame, tuning up an estimated $27.1M at 2,819 dates in 29 territories for an early total of $38.3M. Combined with the U.S. estimated total of $69.2M (less than the $70.3M estimated from the studio on Sunday), the worldwide cume is $107.5M. At the international level, the Universal Pictures, Gold Circle Entertainment and Brownstone Productions sequel is outperforming the original by 176%.
There were several No. 1 openings including the UK and Germany. That’s in harmony with the previous film whose top territories included English- and German-language markets. Building on that movie’s sort of cult ancillary status, the Barden Bellas will beat its offshore theatrical lifetime of $50.3M this week. Australia was the best ex-North American market the first time around and now has an 11-day total of $14.4M. That’s already better than the lifetime of the 2012 tuner.
In its new plays, the a cappella-themed comedy grossed a final $7.7M in the UK at 482 dates. Germany, which was PP’s No. 3 market, opened No. 1 with a final $4.1M at 557 dates; up 112% on the original. The Philippines brought a No. 1 start with a better than expected $2.1M (up from $1.9M) at 136 dates and Taiwan was tops with $1.5M at 76 dates and 41% of the market. Those are notable given that no Asian territory was in the Top 10 on the original save Singapore where it ultimately grossed $1M.
There are 30 openings to come; next weekend adds seven territories including Hungary, Israel, Norway, Peru, Portugal, Serbia/Montenegro and Spain.
Furious 7 reached the checkered flag in China on Tuesday after racing to an historic $390.5M cume – the biggest box office number of all time in the market. In total this frame, F7 put another $6.8M in the tank across 64 territories and now has an international cume of $1.144B and, combined with the U.S. total of $343.8M, it has a worldwide $1.48B. F7 is now the 4th highest-grossing film of all time worldwide and the 3rd internationally in what’s shaping up to be a huge box office year for Universal. After China, the top grossing territories are the UK and Ireland ($56.8M), Mexico ($51.5M), Brazil, ($45.9M) and Germany ($39.4M).
Home is in the home stretch after taking residence in Venezuela this frame, landing the No. 2 slot at $1.5M on 91 screens. In total, the DreamWorks Animation release from Fox added a better than expected $5.3M (up from $4.6M) bringing the offshore haul to $186.4M. Korea is the last market to release this coming week.
Disney’s Cinderella continues to clean up in Japan where it was off just 2% for a local cume of $33.6M. The international weekend was good for a better than expected $3.7M (up from $3.3M) taking the offshore total to $324.1M and the overall box office to $521.3M.
Sony’s Paul Blart: Mall Cop 2 grossed an estimated $1.7M on 1,740 screens in 52 territories this weekend, bringing the overseas cume to $31.5M. Germany was up 11% in its 6th frame for an additional $450K. That takes the local cume to $5.2M. Venezuela in its 5th session was off by just 22% for a total of $3.4M.
Fox’s The Longest Ride earned $1.75M to take the cume to $18M after three weeks in international release. There were no new openings this frame as it continues to play in 26 territories. Same goes for Unfriended which is in the early stages of international play from Universal. An estimate this frame of $1M in 11 territories in 790 runs to take the total to $10.59M. Notably, the UK has grossed $5M in 17 days; Australia has $2.2M in 18 days and Korea $1.5M in 11 days. This week, the film opens in Thailand.
Universal’s other horror film, Oujia, is still playing in 5 markets at 212 dates to add another $338K this weekend to bring its final total to $52M. Combined with the U.S. total of $51.1M, the worldwide total is now $103.2M. This weekend marks the end of the theatrical rollout. The top holdover was France; in its third weekend in play, it grossed anotehr $237K at 166 dates for a 19-day total of $1.7M.
Thomas Vinterberg’s Fox Searchlight pic Far From The Madding Crowd had several Middle East bows and suitors lining up for $789K, that includes the UK where it now has a $6.98M cume. The total offshore is $8M in 12 markets. In its expansion in the states, it landed in the Top 10 domestically this past weekend and is planning another expansion for the Memorial Day holiday in the U.S.
Ex Machina, Alex Garland’s sci-fi film, grossed another $365K on 324 runs to bring its 17 territory gross to $10M. In its second weekend Down Under, it only dropped 25% — a great hold to take an 11-day total of $220K. The film was No. 13 and will be rolling out to other locales starting May 28th through June. In the states, the total is now $19.6M. The film will release next in France on June 3rd and in Italy on July 30th.
The Water Diviner, Russel Crowe’s epic film in which he starred and helmed, grossed another $172K this weekend at the 312 dates that Universal is handling for a seven territory total of $14.9M.
