NBC Nightly News was last week’s most watched newscast, clocking 7.726 million viewers with Lester Holt anchoring, from Baltimore on Tuesday and Friday nights as parts of that city erupted in the wake of the death of Freddie Gray.
Holt nabbed a 39,000 advantage over ABC World News Tonight With David Muir, and a 1.15 million lead over CBS Evening News With Scott Pelley. NBC evening news viewers, and press, wait to see what NBCUniversal decides to do with its regular evening newscaster Brian Williams. Holt has been filling in since early February as Williams waits out a six-month suspension for having claimed he was in a helicopter that took RPG fire in the early days of the Iraq War. NBC is investigating reports he may have fabricated details of his participation in other news events.
NBC took the week in overall audience, but had seen much of its advantage slip away even before Williams was suspended. One year ago, Nightly News enjoyed a 1.35 million edge over World News Tonight.
Holt came in second in the news demo, 130,000 viewers behind first-placed Muir (1.856 million) but nearly half a million viewers ahead of Pelley. Holt trailed by Muir 49K (1.293 million) among younger 18-49 year old viewers.
