Jack Black will play a lovable oddball in Micronations, a comedy helmed by Napoleon Dynamite director Jared Hess that reteams the pair after 2006’s Nacho Libre. Brandt Andersen, Dave Hunter and Hess are producing via their newly launched Buffalo Film Company. Black’s Electric Dynamite and Damon Ross also will produce.
The script by New Girl writers Robert Snow and Christian Magalhaes is set in the world of do-it-yourself countries, inhabited by eccentrics and visionaries who have declared their own backyards sovereign nations. Black’s character soon finds himself recruited as Head of Defense for the tiny nation of Valoria (population: 12) and is thrust into an overblown battle with neighboring nation, Wayne County, NV.

“Once I learned that there were people within the United States who have created their very own countries, I knew I had to make a movie about them,” says Hess. “Jack and I have been looking for another project to team up on, and the hilarious world of Micronations spoke to both of us.”
Hess’ next film, Masterminds starring Kristen Wiig and Zack Galifianakis, opens August 7 via Relativity. He’s also attached to direct Disney’s Overnight On 42nd Street. He’s repped by UTA. Black is playing R.L. Stine in Sony’s Goosebumps, which releases in October, and has HBO series The Brink on deck next month. He’s with WME.
