ABC Studios has signed a two-year overall deal with up-and-coming writer-director Nick Weiss (Drunk Wedding) to develop for network and cable as well as direct existing ABC series and future pilots.
ABC Studios first got in business with Weiss late last year when the studio commissioned an off-cycle comedy pilot, Family Reunion, co-written by Weiss & Josh Friedlander and directed by Weiss. It was presented as ‘found footage’ shot by a group of cousins at their dysfunctional family’s tropical reunion.
Done as an experiment in pursuing alternative, economically efficient avenues for developing primetime material, Family Reunion did not go to series but Weiss got the attention of ABC Studios executives, leading to the overall deal.

Weiss, repped by WME and Apostle’s George Heller, has experience going the non-traditional route in features. He directed and co-wrote with his brother Tony the micro-budgeted comedy Drunk Wedding for Paramount Insurge, produced by Brad Weston, Couper Samuelson and John Hamburg. It will get a theatrical release on May 22 alongside day-and-date releases on VOD.
