Tonight’s Top 10 list features celebrities reading the last thing they would like to say to Dave, delivered by many of the stars who had been seen by reporters and tweeting fans parked outside the Ed Sullivan Theatre, including Jerry Seinfeld, Barbara Walters, Steve Martin and Alec Baldwin. Meanwhile, Foo Fighters played Letterman offstage. We hear they performed “Everlong” — that’s also the song he asked them to play on his first night back on the air after being gone for a long stretch after having open heart surgery.
Letterman’s final day as host of a late-night TV talk show has been a major media pile-on. Reporters camped outside the theatre to get glimpses of Letterman pals arriving, in hopes some of them might also be making on-air/on stage appearances. CBS had left blank plans for tonight’s show. Letterman closed out after 33 years, 6,028 broadcasts and 16 Emmy Awards — walking away as the longest-running host in U.S. late-night TV history.
