Auspiciously missing among the 15 programs CBS officially renewed today was veteran crime drama CSI. But it has not been unceremoniously cancelled. I hear the network continues to work on a finale plan for next season, likely a movie wrapping up the series, which spawned a billion-dollar franchise for the company. I hear the announcement might be made at CBS’ upfront presentation on Wednesday.
By getting a proper goodbye, CSI would break the pattern of long-running and hugely profitable franchise crime procedurals getting abrupt cancellations with no send-off, which was the case with NBC’s Law & Order and CBS’ CSI: Miami and CSI: NY.
It also would resolve the cliffhanger in the most recent Season 15 finale, which left Elisabeth Shue’s character is in a coma, with her fate hanging in the balance.
