Borgen creator Adam Price is trading politics for religion with Rides Upon The Storm (working title), a new 10-part faith-based drama from Denmark’s prolific public broadcaster DR. The network has ordered two seasons, 20 episodes in all, with shooting to begin in spring 2016 for a 2017 premiere. Price calls it “a dramatic, character-based story about two brothers and what happens when war and a number of personal conflicts hit a so-called ‘ordinary’ family.”
Studiocanal is handling worldwide distribution on the series that’s made in co-production with Arté France, SAM Le Français and SAM Productions Aps. This is the first fruit of a May 2014 deal between Studiocanal and Price, Søren Sveistrup (The Killing) and Meta Louise Foldager (A Royal Affair) to create SAM with a mandate to produce ambitious drama projects for local and international networks.
Price, whose Borgen has scooped several major awards and been sold in over 80 countries, says, “In the last 10-15 years, we have seen an intensification of the situation between the great world religions, which affects international politics and everyone’s daily life. Just as politics was the starting point for a very personal story for the main characters in Borgen, the concept of faith will serve as the backdrop of the drama in Rides Upon The Storm.”
Camilla Hammerich, who produced Borgen at DR Fiktion, is producer.
DR has been instrumental in the evolution of Danish drama, beginning with 2007’s The Killing (Forbrydelsen); followed by the political intrigue of Borgen; and last year’s family drama The Legacy. On deck for early 2016, DR has Follow The Money, a financial crime thriller from Jeppe Gjervig Gram (Borgen), Anders Frithiof August (The Legacy) and Jannik Tai Mosholt (Borgen). As with many DR dramas, it was just sold to BBC Four.
