The UK’s High Court has approved an order requiring the five of the country’s major ISPs to block access to four sites known as Popcorn Time. The Motion Picture Association initiated the legal process, arguing that the sites — popcorntime.io, flixtor.me, popcorn-time.se and isoplex.isohunt.to — enable users to download an app that facilitates widespread access to copyright infringing film and television content. Justice Birss ruled that Popcorn Time “has no legitimate purpose” and that “the operators of Popcorn Time know what they are doing is illegal. Their website states: ‘Downloading copyrighted material maybe illegal in your country. Use at your own risk.’” Said Stan McCoy, President and Managing Director of the MPA, EMEA: “Court Orders are a proportionate and effective measure to tackle sites dedicated to facilitating and promoting online copyright infringement. The film and TV industry is comprised of hundreds of thousands of men and women working hard behind the scenes to bring the vibrant, creative stories we enjoy to the screen; content theft undermines that hard work.” Said Mark Gill, a member of the Internet Security Task Force, “Today’s ruling represents a real victory not only for major studios but for the small businesses that can least afford the kind of content-theft that those behind Popcorn Time sites have gotten away with for far too long.”
Genius Brands & Stan Lee's Pow! Entertainment In Joint Venture For Post-Marvel IP
Vancouver-based Arcana is partnering with Stan Lee’s POW! Entertainment on The Unknowns, a new comic universe on which Chris “Doc” Wyatt will be at the creative helm. The project, which Wyatt describes as “Ben Ten meets Men In Black with a rock and roll soundtrack,” revolves around two average teenagers help alien protectors disguise themselves as a touring rock group in order to take out undercover cells of invaders. “Stan Lee was there when Arcana published our first comic book just over 10 years ago,” CEO Sean Patrick O’Reilly said. “To be working with him on a new intellectual property and creating a new universe has truly been a dream come true.” Said Lee: “The Unknowns is an idea I’ve had for a while, and bringing these characters to life with Arcana and Sean is exciting. He’s created his own comic book character army, and he’s kind of a Canadian version of me.”
Following on the success of current feature Dragon Ball Z: Resurrection Of F, Toei Animation — its primary financier, animation producer and local distributor — is going ahead with Dragon Ball Super, the first all-new Dragon Ball TV series in 18 years. The animated show, which will debut in Japan in July, reunites the franchise’s characters and will follow the aftermath of Goku’s fierce battle with Majin Buu as he attempts to maintain Earth’s fragile peace. Overseen by Dragon Ball’s original creator, Akira Toriyama, and produced with Fuji Television, Dragon Ball Super will draw on its past to create a new universe. Introduced as a manga in Weekly Shonen Jump in 1984, Dragon Ball has evolved into a global brand seen in more than 70 countries, with more than 230M copies of its comic books sold. “When I joined Toei Animation, one of my first assignments saw me working on the production of Dragon Ball Z,” said Atsushi Kido, producer for Toei Animation. “While there for only a short period of time, being a part of the series left a lasting impression.”
