HBO has just dropped the first look at Season 2 of its crime drama True Detective, which stars Colin Farrell, Vince Vaughn, Taylor Kitsch and Rachel McAdams and is set in Los Angeles this time around. The Nic Pizzolatto-created series was the talk of the water coolers last season with Matthew McConaughey, Woody Harrelson and Michelle Monaghan hitting it out of the park and racking up plenty of awards-season love — though few actual wins aside from an Emmy for director Cary Fukunaga and a WGA victory for Pizzolatto.
The eight-episode Season 2, which premieres June 21, revolves around three police officers (Farrell, Kitsch and McAdams) and a career criminal (Vaughn) who must navigate a web of conspiracy in the aftermath of a murder. Kelly Reilly is also a new addition to the cast playing Vaughn’s wife. Justin Lin (Fast & Furious pics) is directing the first two episodes.

In addition to the five regulars, True Detective has cast a slew of recurring players including Michael Irby, Abigail Spencer , Leven Rambin, Riley Smith, Lolita Davidovich, James Frain, Adria Arjona, Christian Campbell, Michael Hyatt and Yara Martinez.
Check out the trailer. Does it pass the first test? It certainly seems to capture the darkness of the first season, which got really dark by the end. With a new cast and a new story, more than a few are waiting to see if Season 2 can replicate its impact.
