Hasbro is bringing its entire library of classic animated titles for franchises such as Transformers and G.I. Joe to online distributor Vimeo on Demand. The initial shows to launch are Transformers: Generation 1 and Jem and the Holograms, with hundreds of episodes from 13 franchises debuting at different points through this year.
It’s the latest programming deal for Vimeo’s relatively new on-demand unit as it tries to move beyond the shadow of giant competitor YouTube with more original and distinctive properties that are available for rent or sale. Earlier this month, its first original series, High Maintenance, was bought by HBO, with an order for six new episodes and plans to make the previous 19 episodes available on demand there.
Individual episodes will sell for $2.99 and rent for 99 cents. Entire series can be purchased for $40. Eventually, hundreds of episodes from 13 franchises will be available this year on Vimeo. Other series include My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic, G.I. Joe, Transformers: Rescue Bots, Transformers: Prime, Transformers: Robots in Disguise, G.I. Joe: Renegades, Kaijudo: Rise of the Duel Masters, Littlest Pet Shop, Pound Puppies, The Adventures of Chuck & Friends and B-Daman Crossfire.
