The Weinstein Co acquired world rights to Lion outside Australia and New Zealand in Cannes last year. Shooting is currently underway on the drama with Garth Davis (Top Of The Lake) directing from a screenplay by Luke Davies about a young man’s search for his biological family. As the production moves from India to Australia, Rooney Mara, David Wenham (Banished) and Divian Ladwa (Detectorists) are joining the See-Saw Films drama that stars Nicole Kidman and Dev Patel.
The story is based on the true life of Saroo Brierley as chronicled in his book A Long Way Home. It follows a young Indian boy who becomes lost in Kolkata and is eventually adopted by a loving Australian couple. Although reticent to hurt their feelings, his yearning to reconnect with his lost mother and sister is reawakened when he meets some fellow Indians by chance and sets off on a quest to find them.
The King’s Speech‘s Emile Sherman and Iain Canning are producing with Angie Fielder. Also featuring in the film are Indian actors including Nawazuddin Siddiqui, Priyanka Bose, Tannishtha Chatterjee and Deepti Naval.
Transmission Films will distribute in Australia and New Zealand.
