It Follows writer/director David Robert Mitchell is making his first foray into TV. Universal Cable Prods and Benderspink are developing his crime series Mr. Postman. It follows a mailman who investigates the dark mysteries within his all-American town after a horrific event occurs on his own street. Mitchell is set to direct and executive produce alongside Benderspink’s Chris Bender, JC Spink and Jake Weiner.
The move also signals a further expansion into the horror genre for UCP and Benderspink. They also are developing Five Ghosts with Black Mask Studios for Syfy with Evan Daugherty (Snow White And The Huntsman) attached to write, and Dreadstar based on Jim Starlin’s superhero comic book. Earlier this week UCP announced a first-look deal with horror visionary Wes Craven (A Nightmare on Elm Street, Scream)
“David is a true artist with incredible vision that I believe will be a game changer in storytelling both in television and film,” said Dawn Olmstead, Executive Vice President, Development at UCP. “We are very excited to take out ‘Mr. Postman,’ his first TV project. It’s like nothing else out there.”
Mitchell’s cult horror pic It Follows, which premiered during the Cannes Film Festival Critics’ Week, had a limited release in March and has since expanded to 1,600 theaters with a 95% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. The Radius-TWC film so far has grossed $13.5 million domestically.
