It’s April, and the networks are experimenting with some of the shows they are going to bring back next season, trying them out in different time periods. CBS has been testing sophomore Mom in the Thursday 9 PM tentpole slot last week and again this week. ABC last night served a double doze of The Goldbergs, in its regular 8:30 PM slot and at 9:30 PM. The 8:30 PM original logged a 2.1 in 18-49, up 11% from its fast national last week, (+5% from the final). It followed a new The Middle (1.9, up .1 from last week’s fast national even with the final). The second new Goldbergs episode at 9:30 PM drew a 1.9, matching the delivery of the slot’s regular, freshman Blackish, last week. Both shows aired behind Modern Family repeats (1.7 last Wednesday, 1.8 last night). The Goldbergs may have proved a more suitable lead-in than Blackish for country music drama Nashville (1.2), which was up .1 (+9%) from last week.
At CBS, Survivor (2.2) was down a tenth from its fast national last week, Criminal Minds (2.0) was even and CSI: Cyber (1.5) was up a tenth. (All 3 series were adjusted up a tenth in the finals last week). If Cyber again inches up in the finals, that would be a promising sign for the freshman drama, which is eying a renewal. The network won the night in total viewers and the demo.
After The Flash came back up from a break on Tuesday, the CW’s Wednesday lineup did the same, with both Arrow (0.9), which featured the exit of a main character, and Supernatural (0.7) up a tenth from their most recent originals two weeks ago.
Fox’s American Idol (1.4) was even with last Wednesday. NBC aired all repeats, with bubble freshman Mysteries of Laura (0.7), holding up OK alongside renewed procedurals Law & Order: SVU (0.8) and Chicago P.D. (0.8).
