High top fades, punk rock and def raps are the order of the day in Dope, a major breakout at Sundance this year that, in the wake of Kendrick Lamar’s To Pimp a Butterfly, couldn’t feel more timely. Now you can see for yourself as the film’s official full-length trailer has dropped.
Part coming of age story and part contemporary examination of the part of LA that spawned Gangsta Rap and G-funk, Dope follows a trio of nerdy South Los Angeles high school students obsessed with the golden age of hip hop, who find themselves running afoul of a local drug dealer after attending an underground party. Forced to unload a huge amount of ecstasy, their college aspirations are threatened, but if they manage to get through it, they might finally end up being cool – er, dope. Classic and contemporary rap fills out the soundtrack.
