IFC has greenlighted comedy series Gigi’s Bucket List, starring David Krumholtz. The eight half-hour episodes will shoot this June in Los Angeles for a premiere later this year.
Gertrude Rotblum, aka “Gigi,” just lost her beloved husband Harold, but has gained a new lease on life with the help of an unknown bank account discovered in his will. With her dead husband’s secret millions, this 76-year-old yenta with a heart of gold and a razor-sharp tongue sets out to experience everything she deprived herself of in her younger years. Gigi (Krumholtz) will live life to its fullest and fastest while ignoring doctor’s orders and turning the stigmas of aging on their head. She will travel to rock festivals and explore new technologies like online dating, with her trusty male nurse sidekick played by Ricky Mabe along for the ride.
“David has done an incredible job of inhabiting this relatable bubbe character,” said IFC president Jennifer Caserta. “I hope to emulate Gigi’s unfiltered honesty and wreckless ambition when conquering my own bucket list some day.”
Krumholtz originated the character earlier last year for Weather From, a website from Barry Sonders, Zach Golden and Mabe, where Gigi provides weather forecasts. In an interview back then, Krumholtz said he had always done this impression of his grandmother that his friend Mabe loved. When Mabe and his collaborators came up with the idea for a website featuring an old Jewish lady character, he asked Krumholtz if he wanted to do his impression. After four and a half hours’ worth of prosthetic makeup, Krumholts became Gigi. IFC ordered a presentation last November.
“This character has been living inside me since birth. Friends have often accused me of acting like a grandma,” said Krumholtz. “It’s an absolute privilege to be bringing Gigi to life for IFC, known for their irreverent brand of comedy and willingness to explore depth of character.”
Gigi’s Bucket List is produced for IFC by Grandma’s House Entertainment. It is executive produced by Krumholtz and Tim Gibbons (Curb Your Enthusiasm), along with Grandma’s House Entertainment’s Ben Newmark and Dan Newmark, Ricky Mabe and Zach Golden. Adam Bold and Mike Lopez also of Grandma’s House Entertainment will serve as producers.
Krumholtz is transformed into Gigi by Alterian Inc. makeup effects guru Tony Gardner (Jackass Presents: Bad Grandpa).
