After going with actors Cedric the Entertainer and Terry Crews for season-long hosting stints the past two years, ABC has returned to its original game plan of having one of its popular personalities host the syndicated version of Who Wants To Be A Millionaire.
Chris Harrison, the face of ABC’s venerable reality franchise The Bachelor, has been named the new host of the nationally syndicated game show starting with its 14th season in fall 2015.
“Chris is an accomplished host and valued member of the Disney/ABC family, and now he’ll also be bringing his classic talent and charm to Millionaire,” said Janice Marinelli, President of Disney/ABC Home Entertainment and Television Distribution.
Harrison, who has hosted The Bachelor for its 19 cycles to date, will continue with his hosting duties on ABC’s hit romantic reality series and its offshoots The Bachelorette and Bachelor In Paradise while also appearing on Millionaire, which usually tapes a season’s worth of episodes over a few-week period in the fall.
According to Disney/ABC, Brooklyn Nine-Nine and The Expendables co-star Crews “is unable to continue on with Millionaire due to his successful and demanding film and primetime TV projects.” Crews also hosts Fox’s clip show comedy World’s Funniest Fails, which has been picked up for more episodes.
The syndicated Millionaire‘s first host was Meredith Vieira, who landed the gig while co-hosting ABC’s The View and stayed on for 11 seasons. The Millionaire hosting stint reportedly was part of a View renewal deal for Vieira. It is unclear whether Harrison is adding the Millionaire job as part of a larger deal with ABC.
Harrison’s hosting credits also include ABC’s live coverage of The Miss America Pageant for the past four years, Emmys Red Carpet Live at the 2012 Primetime Emmys, ABC’s 2011 American Music Awards Red Carpet, ABC’s live television coverage of the final championship rounds of the 2010 Scripps National Spelling Bee and the 2008 American Music Awards Red Carpet Live! on ABC.
