Colin Callender’s Playground Entertainment has been steadily expanding its UK television team with Tom Leggett the latest to join. A former Film4 Senior Development Editor, Leggett will now be Director of Development, Playground Television UK. He will work in the London office alongside Managing Director of Playground Television Louise Pedersen and Creative Director Sophie Gardiner.
Playground is a busy operation these days, just coming off of the critically acclaimed Wolf Hall for BBC Two and Masterpiece. The company is also in production on The Dresser, a filmed adaptation of the classic play that stars Anthony Hopkins and Ian McKellen for the BBC and Starz, and is partnered with New Pictures on thriller The Missing, also for the BBC and Starz.
Leggett’s previous roles include working in development at Element Pictures and in production and acquisitions for The Weinstein Co. His credits at Film4 include ’71, The Riot Club, High-Rise, Cuban Fury, Black Sea, Room, Macbeth, Mr Turner and 12 Years A Slave. At The Weinstein Co, he worked on such titles as My Week With Marilyn, Submarine, The Artist and The King’s Speech.
The hiring of a film executive highlights just how much the lines between film and television are blurring these days. Pedersen commented, “Tom’s deep ties to the film community will be a dynamic addition to our creative team. His appointment further signals our intention to develop and produce innovative and high quality world-class drama projects working with a wealth of talent.”
