TruTV is officially a scripted TV player. After testing the scripted waters with sketch comedy Friends Of The People last fall and ordering its first full-fledged scripted comedy pilots in the past couple of months, TruTV has greenlighted its first full-length scripted comedy series, Those Who Can’t, with a 10-episode order for a 2016 launch.

thosewhocant2It’s been a pretty quick turnaround for the project, which was picked up as TruTV’s first scripted pilot in December. The comedy about a trio of frustrated high school teachers, was created by and stars Adam Cayton-Holland, Andrew Orvedahl and Ben Roy, members of the Denver-based comedy troupe The Grawlix. The series is being produced by Thank You, Brain! Productions and 3 Arts Entertainment, which also was behind Friends Of The People.

Set in Denver, Those Who Can’t follows three dysfunctional high school teachers – played by Cayton-Holland, Orvedahl and Roy – who are as screwed-up as the kids they teach. Maria Thayer plays Abbey Logan, a new librarian who questions, denies and then joins in on the antics of her co-workers.

Those Who Can’t has exactly the kind of fresh, slightly off-kilter humor we’re looking for as we venture into the world of scripted comedy,” said Chris Linn, president and head of programming for truTV. “Adam, Andrew and Ben have created a terrifically funny show that’s a perfect fit for the new truTV and our target audience of young adult viewers.”

Those Who Can’t is part of truTV’s new creative direction towards comedy programming under the new “Way More Fun” tagline. It was followed by two other comedy pilot orders to, Shaq Inc. and Adam Ruins Everything.

Those Who Can’t was originally set up at Amazon where it was one of the six comedy pilots greenlighted in the streaming service’s first pilot season. It didn’t go to series though Amazon left it contention with an order for six additional scripts. Those Who Can’t eventually was put in turnaround and picked up by TruTV, which ordered a new pilot.

Executive producing Those Who Can’t are Cayton-Holland, Orvedahl Roy; Tracey Baird and Krysia Plonka of Thank You, Brain! Productions; Michael Rotenberg and Josh Lieberman of 3 Arts . Angel Annussek is executive producing for truTV, along with Rich Korson, who signed an overall development deal with truTV in 2014.
