UPDATE, 4:16 PM: Air Force One has touched down at LAX and President Barack Obama has walked off the plane. After exchanging a few words with Mayor Eric Garcetti, POTUS just jumped on Marine One to chopper over to Burbank Airport where he’ll motorcade into Hollywood. The L.A. Mayor hopped a lift too.
Back in the City of Angels for the first time since he caused a traffic nightmare in October, Obama has an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live! this evening. The face-to-face visit with the 2012 White House Correspondents Dinner headliner will be followed by a $33,400 per couple DNC event at ICM Partners co-founder Chris Silbermann and his wife Julia Franz’s Santa Monica house where Judd Apatow and Leslie Mann as well as ICM’s Ted Chervin will be among those in attendance. All of which means tons of road closures and rush hour delays for those of us not protected by the Secret Service.
The first of the closures in Burbank and around Sepulveda Boulevard between Lincoln Boulevard and Century Boulevard went into effect at 3 PM with more to follow until around 8:30 PM tonight – especially around the Hollywood and Highland studios of the late night ABC show (see below for full list). No way Mr. President, you could have done this one via satellite like you did last time you chatted with Jimmy? Just sayin’.
Some non-Angelenos, like Fox News’ Greta Van Susteren, are unhappy with Obama for other reasons – as she tweeted earlier today:
Burbank Police tell us that closures with start there in about 10 minutes and go to 5:30 PM. Here’s the areas to avoid:
Northbound and Southbound Hollywood Way from Empire Avenue to Glenoaks Boulevard plus all surrounding side streets:
San Fernando Boulevard
Closures will be in effect starting at approximately 4:30 PM through 5:30 PM.
PREVIOUS, MARCH 11 PM: The fundraiser in chief is coming back to Hollywood with hat in hand and the usual entourage of aides and Secret Service in tow. And you know what that means: Time to look into helicopter rentals, Angelenos. The LAPD has just issued its usual clutch of street closures for a presidential visit, and if you live or work anywhere near the affected areas and don’t own a transporter, you’d be wise to stay clear. Making his 21st trip to the Los Angeles area since taking office, President Barack Obama will be wheels-down at LAX late Thursday afternoon. From there he heads — via motorcade rather than chopper, we’re assuming — to do a guest spot on Jimmy Kimmel Live! for around 5:30 PM – which puts not just the Hollywood & Highland area out of commission at rush hour but surrounding streets as well. Obama then treks west to an early evening DNC roundtable event at the Santa Monica home of ICM Partners co-founder Chris Silbermann and his wife Julia Franz POTUS will stay overnight in LA and is set to leave early Friday.
This will be the chief executive’s first L.A. invasion since October, when he toplined a DNC dinner party/cash grab hosted by Gwyneth Paltrow then hit another fundraiser the next night. That visit came two days after Vice President Joe Biden blew into town and halted traffic and a week-plus before amateur emailer and Democratic nominee-in-waiting Hillary Clinton drained Hollywood of a record $2.1 million at a Jeffrey Katzenberg-hosted event.
So here are the announced street closures for the president’s visit on Thursday and Friday. Make sure you charge your phone and pack an extra bottle of Perrier for your purse dog in case you get trapped in the streets:
