Space invaders! Run for your lives! Wait, these attackers are strangely familiar; no, they’re not little green men from Mars but actual Space Invaders — and Pac-Man, Frogger, Donkey Kong, Qbert and more of their brethren. Welcome to the first trailer for Columbia’s summer tentpole Pixels. Based on Patrick Jean’s 2010 short film, it chronicles an alien race misinterpreting video feeds of classic 1980s arcade games as a war declaration and setting out to destroy Earth, using the games and characters as models for their assaults.
So it’s up to President Kevin James (!) to defend the planet. He calls on his old buddy Adam Sandler, a champion gamer of the Reagan era, to take up the cause. He puts together a ragtag team of arcade hounds (Peter Dinklage and Josh Gad) to defeat said aliens. Also on Our Side is Lt. Col. Michelle Monaghan, who supplies the defenders with an arsenal of unique weapons.
Adam Sandler To Star In Film Quartet For Netflix, Which Continues To Thumb Nose At Theaters
Chris Columbus’ Pixels, originally was set for May 2015 before being pushed to July 24. Tim Herlihy and Timothy Dowling penned the script. Sandler, Columbus, Mark Radcliffe and Allen Covert produced the film, which has a list of exec producers longer than the early lines for Asteroids. Slap your quarter down — no fair taping a string to it! — and dig the trailer.
