EXCLUSIVE: WME has signed Oscar-nominated, Emmy- and Tony-winning multi-hyphenate Julie Taymor. Her screen credits range from Frida to Across The Universe, Titus and The Tempest, and her stage work includes The Lion King and Spider-Man: Turn Off The Dark. She is now preparing to direct Anne Hathaway off-Broadway in Grounded, which opens at the Public in April. Taymor had been a longtime client of Jeff Berg.
With all the talk about a paucity of bold female directors, Taymor picks a good time to look to get busy again in film and TV projects. The controversy around the Spider-Man musical was outsize, but Taymor is a major talent whose big success was the stage musical version of The Lion King. Now in it 18th year, the musical has 23 global productions that have racked up a gross of $6.4 billion. Taymor was the first female director to win the Tony for Direction of A Musical. The musical will open in Mexico and Shanghai later this year.
Also later this year she will release A Midsummer’s Night Dream, a filmed performance of her critically acclaimed sold-out stage Shakespeare production that inaugurated Theatre for a New Audience’s new home in downtown Brooklyn. That film premiered at the last Toronto Film Festival.
Taymor continues to be lawyered by Melanie Cook and David Nochimson at Ziffren Brittenham.
