Rodney Ascher’s The Nightmare, which premiered at this year’s Sundance Film Festival, has been acquired by Gravitas Ventures ahead of its Midnight showing tonight at the just-kicked-off SXSW Midnight section. The horror pic will get a VOD and theatrical release June 5. The pic from Ascher (Room 237) blurs the line between documentary and horror and turns the condition of sleep paralysis into a terror device: Sufferers report the same eerie visits by dark and malevolent shadow people during the incidents.
Ross Dinerstein and Glen Zipper produced, Tim Kirk co-produced and Jamie Carmichael, Kevin Iwashina and Ralph Zipper executive produced. The dealwas negotiated by Mia Bruno for Gravitas and Zac Bright and Kevin Iwashina of Preferred Content on behalf of the filmmakers. Ascher is repped by CAA and manager Lee Stobby.
