Discovery Family, Velocity & More Unveil New Series – Upfronts

Discovery Communications today unveiled its upfronts slate, including plans for new and returning series on Discovery Family Channel, which was rebranded from The Hub — October making 2015-16 its first upfronts season under the new moniker. It also revealed slates for sibling networks Velocity, American Heroes Channel and Destination America.

Discovery Family as previously announced is broadening its programming focus to serve families in primetime, while continuing to showcase Hasbro content in daytime with new seasons of My Little Pony, My Littlest Pet Shop and Transformers Rescue Bots. That means 200 hours of new programming and more than 20 new series in the pipeline including From Wags To Riches With Bill Berloni featuring the popular animal trainer, part of the network’s focus wildlife and pets as well as history and mystery.

At Velocity, the network is returning Barrett-Jackson Live after its January debut over six days made it the network’s No. 1 series in most key metrics. The new season will launch in January 2016 with 40 live hours of car auctions from Scottsdale, AZ,  and continue through the year with 60 live hours of three additional Barrett-Jackson auctions. Also returning is the channel’s signature Overhaulin’ in November and Season 2 of the Dave Kindig starrer Bitchin’ Rides.

The American Heroes Channel announced three new original series for 2015 and two more in 2016 to pair with its returning series including Gunslingers and Against The Odds, the network’s top two original series.

Destination America will premiere two specials: Epic America, which premieres May 5, tours America to capture “the beauty, ferocity, and history of iconic landscapes.” Also in the works is 9/11: The Lost Hero (wt),  which documents the incredible story of Jason Thomas, who was identified as the mysterious unknown soldier responsible for the most incredible rescue mission of 9/11.

In each episode of WHEELER DEALERS Mike Brewer hunts for a decent car at the right price –looking through classified ads, internet auctions, specialist clubs and garages to find the perfect second hand car. Once he’s found the right car Brewer uses his experience to negotiate the best price. The car then goes to the WHEELER DEALERS workshop where Edd China casts his expert eye over what Brewer has found, and conducts a fascinating, expert “how to” session for viewers as he makes repairs to the vehicle. Brewer then finds a buyer for the restored auto and hopefully banks a profit for the duo after negotiating the sale.
