When it comes to evaluating the financial performance of top movies, it isn’t about what a film grosses at the box office. The true tale is told when production budgets, P&A, talent participations and other costs collide with box office grosses, and ancillary revenues from VOD to DVD and TV. To get close to that mysterious end of the equation, Deadline is repeating our Most Valuable Blockbuster tournament, using data culled by seasoned and trusted sources. We’re counting down from No. 20 and will present the data en masse Monday.
THE FILM: It is fascinating that this and No. 11 film Neighbors earned so much money on a modest gross. It is a testament to the success formula of an R-rated comedy that stays on budget. Here’s how 22 Jump Street cracked the Top 10 with a worldwide gross of just $331.3 million. The story is similar to Neighbors, only this R-rated film did it a little bit better.

THE BOTTOM LINE: According to our experts, stars Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum had 6% gross paydays on the sequel, with big upfront payments. But this film was so modestly budgeted at $58 million that it made big profit for Sony Pictures. The film opened mid-June with a $57M first weekend. Its grosses, both domestic and foreign, eclipsed the 2012 original film. So even though the film concluded by lampooning the notion of umpteenth sequels Jump Street sequels, the allure of a third film has to be huge for Sony, which has placed a premium on franchises. Hill and Tatum, and Ice Cube, for that matter, will have the leverage to lobby for even better deals. And after Sony put in motion another Ghostbusters film with Joe and Anthony Russo directing Drew Pearce’s script and Tatum looking to star, I would not be surprised if Hill hasn’t already gotten a phone call. Our experts place Sony’s net haul at $144.5M, with a Cash on Cash Return of 1.64. That’s a shade lower than Neighbors, but that film grossed about $60 million less and neither benefited from a China berth.
