Distribution and exhibition vet Steve Bunnell, who most recently served as Cinemark Theatres’ EVP of Global Content Programming, has been named Senior Vice President, Assistant General Sales Manager at Universal’s domestic theatrical distribution division. He will report to Nicholas Carpou, Universal’s President of Domestic Distribution, and starts on March 2. Bunnell will assist in leading the domestic sales team and work closely with EVP, General Sales Manager Mark Gaines on all matters relating to licensing of Universal theatrical titles.
Bunnell has a career in distribution and exhibition that spans over 30 years. He started as a Mann Theatres film buyer in 1981. In 1992, he served as the general sales manager for Samuel Goldwyn, before becoming the SVP and head film buyer at Loews Theatres in 1993, a role he held for 13 years. In 2006, Bunnell became the chairman of domestic distribution for The Weinstein Company before transitioning to his most recent role at Cinemark.
“Steve has had a remarkable career in exhibition and in the 25 years I’ve known him, it is clear that he is well-respected among his industry peers,” said Carpou in a statement. “He will be a great addition to our team as we head into what is going to be a big year for Universal.”
