Tommy Dewey (The Mindy Project) has landed the male lead opposite Michaela Watkins in Hulu’s single-camera comedy series Casual, executive produced by Jason Reitman who will direct the opening episode.
Written by up-and-coming scribe Zander Lehmann, Casual follows the story of a dysfunctional family with a bachelor brother, Alex Cole (Dewey), and his newly divorced sister, therapist Valerie Cole (Watkins). The creator of a popular dating website, Alex uses it to match himself with a never-ending string of good-looking women, whom he sleeps with to try and mask his depression and feelings of loneliness. As Valerie rejoins the world of casual dating, Alex pledges to mentor her and help her embrace her single life, while he simultaneously struggles to find meaning in his own.
Reitman, Lehmann, Liz Tigelaar, who serves as showrunner, and Helen Estabrook executive produce for Lionsgate TV. Dewey, repped by the Kohner Agency, Industry Entertainment and Myman Abel, last season co-starred in the NBC comedy pilot Mission Control, which was picked up to series but didn’t go on the air.
