Paul Dano and John Cusack take on the larger-than-life story of Beach Boys mastermind Brian Wilson in Love & Mercy, the biopic of sorts that Lionsgate and Roadside Attractions will release June 5. Bill Pohlad directed from a script by Oren Moverman and Michael Alan Lerner. The film tracks Wilson’s career path as he fueled he and his brothers’ rise to the top of the rock ‘n roll world — remember, the Beatles said their 1967 opus Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band was inspired by trying to keep up with the Beach Boys’ Pet Sounds the year before — and then succumbed in numerous awful ways to the cost that exacted. (Don’t worry, Brian Wilson’s story ends well, though he went through hell to get there.)

Lionsgate and Roadside teamed to nab the pic in Toronto last fall in a deal worth $3 million after several bidders were in the mix attracted to Pohlad’s tastemaking talents as a producer that have included 12 Years A Slave, Terrence Malick’s The Tree Of Life and Into The Wild. Wilson himself is among the producers. Elizabeth Banks and Paul Giamatti co-star.

Check out the first trailer that just dropped that shows Dano as young Brian and Cusack as an older version — does it work for you?
