The red carpet scene ahead of tonight’s Saturday Night Live 3 1/2-hour celebration of its 40th anniversary had its share of surreal moments, including a surprisingly self-aware Kanye West spoofing his stage-bombing Grammy antics. But the pre-show’s best, and most awkward, moment had to belong to Jim Carrey, a frequent SNL host, including with a memorable Matthew McConaughey spoof ad back in October.
Today anchors Savannah Guthrie and Matt Lauer were interviewing celebrities as they came down the carpet. Carrey stopped just as he was about to end his interview alongside Tina Fey, whose 2008 doppelganger Sarah Palin was on the red carpet too, effusing over its iconic status.
“Can I ask you a question, you guys?” Carrey began. “Where are you hiding Brian Williams? Where is he? I just want to say something in his defense: If the helicopter in front of me gets hit, I’m taking the story.”
Lauer and Guthrie murmured inaudibly alongside some nervous laughs, then Lauer feigned a peek at his watch, saying, “Oh, look at the time.” Fey’s eyes got big as she appeared to say she didn’t know where Williams is either. Lauer said, after a lengthy pause: “Thank you, Jim. Appreciate it.”
No word from any of them on the anchor’s indubitably secure, undisclosed location. Williams was suspended last week for six months without pay after controversy over his inflated claims about being in a military helicopter in Iraq that took ground fire. Williams, by the way, is the only news anchor to have hosted Saturday Night Live.
And that Kanye move? As the red carpet show credits rolled under Lauer and Guthrie, he jumped into the camera, interrupting the two in an amusing homage of sorts to his onstage antics when Taylor Swift won a VMA a few years back and another near interruption last week of Beck. That Kanye.
