Tickets just went on sale yesterday at Fandango and MovieTickets.com for Lionsgate’s sequel The Divergent Series: Insurgent, however, sources tell Deadline that the film is heading for a $57M three-day box office opening during its March 20-22 weekend. The estimate does not take into account advance ticket sales, but is based off industry tracking. Total awareness is high across men and women, however, females under 25 are showing the strongest interest at 83%. Total awareness for teens 12-16 is at 77%, however, girls in that demo are trending at 80%.
Insurgent will also get an extra boost from its play in IMAX theaters. That number ranks just slightly higher than the first Divergent which made $54.6M last March in its first frame before finaling at a 2.76x multiple with $150.9M. Worldwide Divergent generated $288.7M.
During the weekend of March 20-22, Insurgent will be opening against Open Road’s Sean Penn-Idris Elba-Javier Bardem action title The Gunman and the Pure Flix Christian drama Do You Believe? The weekend prior, Walt Disney gets a leg up on those young females who are apt to ultimately take in Insurgent with their live action adaptation of Cinderella.
Insurgent is the second book in Veronica Roth’s bestselling HarperCollins YA book series, which has altogether sold more than 30M copies. Yesterday when tickets went on sale, Fandango and MovieTickets.com were offering various Divergent-related prizes and perks with purchases.
