German-born DJ, musician, actor and YouTube personality Flula Borg has landed the title role in NBC’s comedy pilot Cuckoo, an adaptation of the breakout BBC Three comedy series, which starred Andy Samberg.
NBC’s Cuckoo is the story of a middle-class family whose daughter comes back from a summer abroad married to a charming but infuriating eccentric named Cuckoo (Borg), much to her father’s annoyance. (In the British series, an English girl returns home from her post-college gap year with an eccentric hippie American husband named Cuckoo, originally played by Samberg.)
UK writers Robin French and Kieron Quirke, who created the BBC series, wrote the adaptation with The Simpsons veteran Tim Long, who serves as showrunner. French, Quirke and Long executive produce with the original series’ exec producers Ash Atalla for Lionsgate TV and the original series’ producer Roughcut Television.
Borg, a Bavarian-born LA transplant, has amassed over 60M views on his YouTube channel. (you can watch one of his most popular videos below). By the upfronts in May, when NBC will make decisions on which of its pilots to pick up to series, Borg’s profile in the U.S. will have risen significantly as he has a key role in Pitch Perfect 2, from NBC sibling Universal Pictures, which opens May 15. Borg is repped by UTA and Brillstein Entertainment Partners.
