David Morrissey is the latest new cast addition for the upcoming second season of CBS‘ summer drama series Extant. The Walking Dead alum will recur as celebrated and charming General Tobias Shepherd, Head of the Global Security Commission. Shepherd has a personal history with Molly Woods (Halle Berry), a fact that complicates his work (and his life) in the face of a deadly new threat to humanity. Morrissey joins new regular Jeffrey Dean Morgan.
In Season 2, astronaut Woods discovers she has unwittingly put the human race on a path to destruction and that she and a mysterious stranger might be the only hope for survival. As part of the series’ evolving storyline, which now will focus on Molly’s efforts to track down her alien son who is threatening the human race, the series is revamping its supporting cast. Besides Berry, coming back as regulars are co-stars Pierce Gagnon, who plays Molly’s android son, and Grace Gummer, who plays an assistant on the Humanichs Project. Season 1 series regulars Goran Visnjic, who played Berry’s robotics engineer husband, and Camryn Manheim, who played her friend and co-worker, might return for a couple of episodes. Hiroyuki Sanada and Michael O’Neill are not coming back.
Morrissey appeared on last night’s episode of The Walking Dead in a brief cameo as one of several dead characters (The Governor) who returned in an hallucinogenic scene. He also is attached to star in and executive produce The Driver, Showtime’s drama adaptation of the three-part BBC One thriller miniseries The Driver, which he also toplined.
