EXCLUSIVE: Judy Gold, an actress and comedian who took home Daytime Emmy Awards in 1998 and ’99 for her work on The Rosie O’Donnell Show, will play Eleanor Roosevelt in Clinton The Musical, the off-Broadway transfer of a moderately well-reviewed show from last summer’s New York Musical Theatre Festival. A regular contributor to The Moth, a popular performance and podcast series in which people perform monologues of stories from their lives, she’s been seen on CBS’ 2 Broke Girls and ABC’s Celebrity Wife Swap and starred in the off-Broadway shows The Judy Show — My Life As A Sitcom and 25 Questions For A Jewish Mother. Gold played Mrs. Roosevelt in a series of backers’ auditions held in November.
Kerry Butler (Hairspray, Rock Of Ages) is cast to play Hilary Clinton in the lowdown musical comedy, which is about the two sides of the former president. Casting of the title role(s), played in the festival by Karl Kenzler and Duke Lafoon, is expected later this week. The dramatis personae also includes Monica Lewinsky, Dick Morris, Newt Gingrich and Kenneth Starr.
Clinton The Musical has a score by Paul Hodge, book by Paul Hodge and Michael Hodge and staging by Dan Knechtges (Broadway’s Lysistrata Jones and Xanadu). It’s slated to begin performances March 25 at New World Stages, the off-Broadway complex recently acquired by the Shubert Organization, with opening night on April 9. The producer is Kari Lynn Hearn, with executive producer Ken Davenport.
