NBC is adding a new comedy voice to its pilot slate, giving a green light to an untitled multi-camera comedy from Aseem Batra (Animal Practice). This marks the first pilot order for writer-actress Batra, who has been under an overall deal at Universal TV.
Written by Batra, the untitled project is a politically incorrect office comedy centered on best friends Dale and Georgie whose relationship is upended when he starts dating the “perfect” woman. Batra is executive producing with Joe and Anthony Russo for Universal TV. Last season, Batra developed another comedy for NBC and Uni TV with the Russo brothers executive producing, a single-camera project loosely based on her life growing up in Georgia. It didn’t go to pilot stage.
Batra, repped by WME and Odenkirk Provissiero, got her start as a writer/actress on Scrubs before moving to The Cleveland Show, on which she worked as a writer-producer and a voice cast member.
The Aseem Batra project brings the number of NBC comedy pilots to 11 — 6 of them multi-camera — in addition to the straight-to-series order to Eva Longoria’s single-camera comedy Telenovela.
