EXCLUSIVE: Bradley Cooper may have been snubbed by the Golden Globes and the Screen Actors Guild, but Broadway and the West End love him. When his lauded performance as John Merrick, AKA the Elephant Man, completes its limited run at the Booth Theatre on February 22, Cooper and the rest of the show’s accomplished cast will get a few weeks off before reuniting for a 12-week run in London that will begin, two production sources tell me, in April.
The producers—including both the Shubert and Nederlander theater-owning organizations, along with (take a deep breath) Terry Allen Kramer, Catherine Adler, Roger Berlind, Caiola Productions, Patrick Catullo, Larry Hirschhorn, Jeffrey Finn Productions, Van Kaplan, Edward M. Kaufmann, Hal Luftig, Arielle Tepper Madover, Peter May, Stephanie P. McClelland, Douglas Smith, Jonathan M. Tisch and Scott & Brian Zeilinger—haven’t closed a deal on a West End house as yet, but they’re about to. One possibility is the Haymarket, where Penelope Wilton is about to begin a limited run in a new play, Taken At Midnight, scheduled to close March 14. At nearly 900 seats, it’s comparable to the Booth, with 774.
The acclaimed revival has been one of the fall’s top Broadway moneymakers and a feather in Cooper’s cap as he comes off phenomenal reviews for his starring role in American Sniper. Folks have been shelling out an average of $167.99 per ticket, the top tab for a non-musical on Broadway, and it’s been SRO all the way.
Scott Ellis staged the Elephant Man revival, which co-stars Patricia Clarkson and Alessandro Nivola, has sets and projections by Timothy R. Mackabee, costumes by Clint Ramos, lighting by Philip S. Rosenberg and sound by John Gromada.
On the Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon on Monday night, Cooper alluded not only to a possible London run but to maybe returning to Broadway in the fall. No official comment from the producers on either plan was forthcoming.
