Jude Law, Scoot McNairy and Ben Mendelsohn star in Black Sea. As I say in my video review above, I don’t usually expect much from a non-awards season release debuting in the middle of January’s awards season. But this turns out to be a ripping good throwback of an undersea treasure yarn that reminds me of old-school adventures such as The Treasure Of The Sierra Madre.
Out of work and under pressure from his former shipping-company employer, Law pulls together a refurbished sub and crew and goes looking for lost Russian gold in a sunken German U-boat in the Black Sea. But when the crew is told they’ll get equal shares of the recovered gold, someone figures out that unequal survival rates will mean more money for those who are left.
The film is directed by Kevin Macdonald (The Last King of Scotland, State Of Play and a lot of documentaries) from a script by Dennis Kelly (the U.K. science-fiction show Utopia, Pulling). Focus Features is handling distribution in the United States.
