There certainly was some breeze at the back of the Treasure Island prequel when it returned on January 24 – a Scottish breeze some might say. The Season 2 debut of Starz’s Black Sails at 9 PM that night was preluded by a hyped sneak peek look at the April 4 return of Outlander. While it wasn’t a viewership gale, the 1-minute glimpse of the time travelling romance helped bump up the Black Sails S2 opener to 860,000 total viewers. That’s about 2% better than the first showing of the Michael Bay executive produced series did on its debut on January 25, 2014. Weaving two worlds together, the Outlander preview played before every one of the ten airings of the Black Sails S2 opener on January 24 and 25th.
Starz being Starz, the real depth is over the whole premiere weekend and by that measure Black Sails also came back steady. Debut Weekend to debut weekend, 10-airings to 10-airings, Black Sails dipped 7% from the 2.43 million who watched the series opener back in 2014. Front to back, the 2.24 million who joined Captain Flint (Toby Stevens) and crew on New Providence Island was also up a strong 27% from the 1.77 million the series had for its S1 finale weekend starting on March 15 last year. Just released Live + 3 numbers have Black Sails’ S2 opening weekend totaling just over 2.8 million viewers – a 25% rise in DVR afterlife.
The cabler is obviously are pretty confident about the series and not just the 10-episodes of this new season. With new shows like Golden Globe multi-nomination The Missing and the LeBron James produced Survivor’s Remorse premiering last fall, Starz picked up the Jon Steinberg and Robert Levine created Black Sails for a third season back in October.
