EXCLUSIVE: Oscar voters learned the name Miyavi over the weekend as Angelina Jolie’s Best Picture contender Unbroken made its awards-season premiere. Now the Japanese rock star-turned-actor has signed with WME in all areas with a stateside crossover career in his sights.
Miyavi already is famous in his native Japan as a visual kei glam rock singer and guitarist who has released nearly a dozen albums and toured the world four times. He makes his acting debut in Universal’s December 25 biopic Unbroken as Mutsuhiro Watanabe aka The Bird, the unpredictably sadistic WWII prison camp sergeant who in real life terrorized American prisoner of war Louis Zamperini (Jack O’Connell) and went into hiding after Japan surrendered, never to be tried as a war criminal.
It’s a juicy and prominent role for the first-time actor, who was sought after by Jolie and won the part despite only having studied English for eight years. Miyavi recently moved to LA and is playing a show at the El Rey this month. He continues to be repped by Red Light Management and J-Glam Management in Japan.
