The Theory of Everything‘s leading thesps Eddie Redmayne and Felicity Jones, who respectively play Stephen and Jane Hawking, are being honored at the 30th edition of the Santa Barbara International Film Festival with the Cinema Vanguard Award. They will be presented with the honor at a tribute at the Arlington Theatre on Thursday, January 29. The Cinema Vanguard Award recognizes those actors who take artistic risks, forge their own path and make a unique contribution to film. Previous honorees include Martin Scorsese and Leonardo DiCaprio, Amy Adams, Jean Dujardin and Bérénice Bejo, Nicole Kidman, Christoph Waltz, Vera Farmiga, Stanley Tucci, Peter Sarsgaard, Kristin Scott Thomas, and Ryan Gosling.
In a statement, SBIFF Executive Director, Roger Durling said, “These two actors continue to impress, and we are honored to have them at SBIFF to celebrate their fantastic body of work. Eddie Redmayne and Felicity Jones’s performances together in The Theory of Everything are nothing short of an astonishing collaboration, recalling the alchemy of Daniel Day-Lewis and Brenda Fricker in My Left Foot.”
To date, Redmayne and Jones have each received Golden Globe and Screen Actors Guild Award nominations for turns in James Marsh’s Theory of Everything. In 2013, Redmayne was honored by SBIFF with the Virtuoso Award for his portrayal of Marius in Les Miserables. Jones made her mark during the 2011 awards season in Like Crazy, having won the Sundance Film Festival Special Jury Prize earlier that year, and a Gotham Independent Film Award for Breakthrough Actor and National Board of Review Award for Best Breakthrough Performer. The Santa Barbara International Film Festival runs January 27 – February 7, 2015.
