EXCLUSIVE: As part of its first slate, Robert Simonds’ upstart film and TV studio STX Entertainment, in partnership with Route One Entertainment, has acquired U.S. distribution rights to the Billy Ray-directed The Secret In Their Eyes. The remake of Juan José Campanella’s 2009 film stars Chiwetel Ejiofor, Nicole Kidman and Julia Roberts. Shooting on the crime thriller starts in January in L.A. Route One also has boarded as co-financier with IM Global, which first sold the project in Cannes this year. STX will handle marketing and distribution of the film in the U.S. and produce with IM Global.
The latter has been on a hot sales streak with the title. Most recently, Universal Pictures International acquired a host of major territories during AFM.
Ejiofor will play a former assistant district attorney who returns to L.A. on a joint task force with the FBI, still obsessed by the unsolved murder that continues to haunt him. As he inches closer to solving the crime, he uncovers a shocking truth that will shed a terrifying new light on past events.
The $20M film is produced by Mark Johnson (Breaking Bad, The Chronicles Of Narnia franchise). John Ufland is a co-producer, with Campanella exec producing alongside IM Global’s Stuart Ford and Matt Jackson.
The original Argentine film won the Best Foreign Language Oscar in 2010. CAA packaged, arranging financing and brokered the deal.
