Sonia Friedman, the producer who brought Jez Butterworth’s oddball one-acter to Broadway’s intimate Circle In The Square Theater with arena-size star Hugh Jackman, announced today that the $3.2 million drama has recouped the costs of producing it. That means the rest of the run, which began on Halloween and ends February 8, should send plenty of cream into the pitchers of everyone sharing the profits of the mostly SRO stand.
The show is the second newcomer of the season to announce recoupment, following the Nathan Lane-Matthew Broderick revival of Terrence McNally’s It’s Only A Play. The River co-stars Cush Jumbo and Laura Donnelly as girlfriends of weekend fisherman Jackman who weave in and about the dreamlike, time-traveling story. The director is Ian Rickson.
