Fox has put in development an action drama from Basil Iwanyk’s Thunder Road Television and Warner Bros. Written by Arrow co-executive producer Wendy Mericle, the untitled project is set on Coronado Island and revolves around the first group of female U.S. soldiers vying to earn a spot in the world’s toughest boy’s club: the Navy SEALs.
In summer 2013, the Pentagon unveiled a plan to allow women into the last bastions of male-only combat, the elite Navy SEALs and Army Rangers units. According to the plan, Naval Base Coronado off the coast of San Diego, where all SEALs go through initial training, would welcome the first women in 2016.
The pitch was developed and will be overseen by Thunder Road EVP Kent Kubena. The company is currently in production on the upcoming CW/WBTV drama series The Messengers and also has television projects in development at AMC and TNT.
Mericle, who has a first-look deal with Arrow producer WBTV, started her career at the studio with a writing job on the studio’s WB drama Jack & Bobby. She went on to work on Desperate Housewives, Eastwick, Eli Stone and Smallville.
Thunder Road is repped by CAA and attorney PJ Shapiro. Mericle is repped by CAA and attorney Brian Agboh.
