The second trailer for Universal’s January 16 thriller Blackhat begins with a prophetic quote made by former C.I.A. director Leon Panetta during a Senate hearing — it’s particularly eerie given the current climate that Sony has suffered: “The next Pearl Harbor that we confront could very well be a cyber-attack.” Blackhat is directed by Michael Mann and stars Chris Hemsworth as a hacker who is released from prison to assist U.S. and Chinese authorities run down a cyber criminal. The film has all the visual blue-steely tones of Mann’s previous working-man thriller dramas such as Heat and Collateral, which have become cinematic trademarks for the director. However, Blackhat wasn’t shot by those films’ respective DPs Dante Spinotti and Dion Beebe/Paul Cameron. British D.P. Stuart Dryburgh who lensed the first episode of Mann’s HBO Luck series as well as Texas Killing Fields, directed by Mann’s daughter Ami Canaan Mann, is the guy giving the film a sleek look.
