Launching tonight for the first of a three-night run, Syfy’s Ascension projects a world where the Moon landing was just a Sixties sideshow to a secret mission to deep space. Unfortunately, even with high intergalactic stakes, this limited-run event series from showrunner Philip Levens (Smallville) never, as my video review says, really gets the afterburners to kick in.
Which is a real shame because the premise of John F. Kennedy ordering a giant spacecraft, AKA, the USS Ascension on a century-long mission in 1963 to find a new world for 600 of mankind’s elite to populate has so many possibilities. Unfortunately, too few of them are explored.
The show stars Gil Bellows, Battlestar Galactica alumni Tricia Helfer, Cougar Town’s Brian Van Holt and Rescue Me’s Andrea Roth among others, the retro-heavy Ascension begins as the mission has been underway for 51 years and is about to reach the point of no return for the original crew’s descendants. And, then, well, you’ll see.
Take a look at my review and tell us what you think. Are you going to take a look at Ascension this week?
