Tony-nominated actress Sanaa Lathan has signed on to play FBI agent Natalie Austin in the magician caper sequel Now You See Me 2. Lathan joins the film’s original castmembers Jesse Eisenberg, Mark Ruffalo, Woody Harrelson, Dave Franco, Morgan Freeman, Michael Caine, as well as newcomers Lizzy Caplan, Jay Chou and Daniel Radcliffe. Now Your See Me 2 is currently dated for June 10, 2016.
Lathan recently wrapped the Sony thriller The Perfect Guy due out next year as well as the Sundance Lab-developed feature Ad Inexplorata in which she plays Captain Emily Maddox, the head of a spaceship fleet on a one-way trip to Mars. The sci-fi dark comedy stars Mark Strong and Luke Wilson. Lathan starred in Universal’s The Best Man comedy franchise which includes its sequel and has signed on for the third chapter The Best Man Wedding. Other credits include Focus Features’ Something New, Tyler Perry’s The Family that Preys, Fox Searchlight’s romantic comedy Brown Sugar, Love and Basketball, Alien vs. Predator, Steven Soderbergh’s viral thriller Contagion, Out of Time opposite Denzel Washington and the upcoming Repentance with Forrest Whitaker and Anthony Mackie. Lathan received an NAACP Image Award nomination for her role on the FX’s Nip/Tuck and a Tony nod for best featured actress in a play in A Raisin in the Sun as Beneatha Younger, a part she later reprised in the ABC Network production. Lathan is repped by John Carrabino and ICM Partners.
Now You See Me 2 follows the magician troupe the Four Horseman a year later as they become embroiled in a new dangerous heist spearheaded by a new enemy. Film goes before the cameras on Dec. 1 in the U.K. and is being directed by Jon M. Chu from a script and story by Pete Chiarelli and Ed Solomon, based on characters created by Boaz Yakin and Edward Ricourt. Producers are Alex Kurtzman, Roberto Orci, and Bobby Cohen. Erik Feig, co-president of the motion picture group, along with Geoff Shaevitz, president of production, will oversee the project for Lionsgate’s Summit label.
