The shortlist for France’s Louis Delluc Prize, one of the country’s highest film honors, has been released with 14 films making the cut across two categories: Best Film and Best Debut Feature. Among the eight main movies, six hail from this year’s Cannes crop. Saint Laurent – which is France’s entry for the Foreign Language Oscar – by Bertrand Bonello; Olivier Assayas’ Juliette Binoche/Kristen Stewart-starrer Clouds Of Sils Maria; veteran Jean-Luc Godard’s 3D Goodbye To Language; Abderrahmane Sissako’s Timbuktu; Pascale Ferran’s Bird People, starring Josh Charles; and Claus Drexel’s Au Bord Du Monde will vie alongside Venice pics Trois Coeurs, by Benoît Jacquot, and Robin Campillo’s Eastern Boys. Godard, Ferran and Jacquot are all former Delluc laureates. The Debut Feature shortlist is made up of Thomas Cailley’s well-received Fortnight film Love At First Fight; Camera d’Or winner Party Girl; Virgil Vernier’s Mercuriales; Mati Diop’s A Thousand Suns; Guillaume Brac’s Tonnerre and Gilles Deroo and Marianne Pistone’s Sheep. A jury of critics and led by outgoing Cannes Film Festival President Gilles Jacob, will hand out the prizes on December 15 in Paris.
Warner Bros Developing Latinx 'Father Of The Bride' Movie With Matt Lopez Penning The Script
China’s Yoozoo Pictures says it will spend 1.2B yuan ($195.3M) on six movies based on the science-fiction book series Three Body, which deals with an alien invasion of Earth. China.org reports that Yoozoo founders Lin Qi, an online game entrepreneur, and online novel writer Kong Xiangzhao, revealed that each film will be budgeted at 200M yuan with neophyte horror helmer Zhang Fanfan directing. Three Body has a rampant following in China and the selection of Zhang as director sent social networks abuzz with calls for the producers to shift gears, or not make the films at all. Undeterred, the filmmakers held a press conference in Beijing on Thursday and unveiled a concept teaser trailer – reportedly dismissed by some fans as terrible – but Kong maintainted, “Three Body is a great science fiction work, and it must be done by Chinese. Even if it will be made into a bad movie, it should be Chinese people who will have done the job.” Award winning author Liu Cixin wrote the books and will exec produce.
As an extension of its Creative Talent program designed to bolster industry skills and training in the UK, Warner Bros has awarded its first scholarship to a film student in Ireland. Daniel Kelly, an MA screenwriting student at the National Film School at Dublin’s Dun Laoghaire Institute of Art, Design and Technology will receive post-graduate funding support and a short paid placement at Warner Bros Ireland’s offices, as well as access to screenings and mentoring support from Warner execs. Warner’s filmmaking history in Ireland includes 1996’s Michael Collins, the highest-grossing Irish film of all time.
Wim Wenders is receiving an Honorary Golden Bear at the Berlin Film Festival in February and will also be the subject of the annual Homage. Several of the German helmer’s films will screen in Berlin including 1976’s Kings Of The Road, 1977’s The American Friend, 1984’s Paris, Texas, 1987’s Wings Of Desire, and 2011 documentary Pina. The following month, the Museum of Modern Art in New York, will honor Wenders with a comprehensive retrospective.
Under The Skin writer/director Jonathan Glazer was awarded the Welcome Trust and BFI Screenwriting Fellowship earlier this week in London. The Fellowship, given out in association with Film4, is worth £30K ($47K) and grants access to some of the world’s most important scientific and health research. Glazer’s credits include last year’s Scarlett Johansson Scotland-set sci-fi pic, as well as 2004’s Birth and 2000’s Sexy Beast. He accepted the award at an event where science met art and featured “Freudian cocktails, scientific illusionists and Sex And The City-inspired therapy sessions.”
