Fox is developing The System, a character driven crime procedural executive produced by Jason Winer. It is written by award-winning playwright Jon Caren (The Recommendations) in his first TV effort. The System, from 20th Century Fox TV where Winer is under an overall deal, is about six 20-somethings with very different points of view on the criminal justice system. While they struggle to figure out their own messy lives, their high stakes jobs force them to make decisions with life or death consequences’. Caren will co-executive produce; Winer executive produces along with Renate Radford through Winer’s Small Dog Picture Company. ‘
Winer reached out to Caren about collaborating together after seeing his play The Recommendation, which was based on Caren’s experience interviewing L.A prosecutors, defense attorneys, and social workers within the L.A prison system. The play just won two LA Ovation Awards, which honor excellence in Los Angeles Theater, over the weekend — for Outstanding Play and Lead Actor in a Play, Malcolm Barrett.
Caren is repped by ICM Partners and Jeff Silver/Grandview. Winer is with ICM Partners, Mosaic, and Todd Rubenstein.
The System joins two comedy sales for Small Dog this season, The One That Got Away, from creators Mike Lisbe and Nate Reger and producer Jason Winer, which has a put pilot commitment at NBC; and The Sound Of The Sumners, a musical family comedy from writer Peter Knight, at Fox with a script commitment plus a significant penalty, and Bachelor Party, based on the movie, at ABC.
