Jason Robert Brown is back on Broadway, in a much lighter vein than his ill-fated Bridges Of Madison County a year ago, as Honeymoon In Vegas began eight weeks (!) of previews at the Nederlander Theatre in anticipation of a January 15 opening. The musical, headlined by Tony Danza and co-written with the 1992 film’s writer/director Andrew Bergman, played seven performances and took in $366,136, just over one-third of its gross potential. The New York critics weighed in with lotsa thumbs up when the show had its tryout run at New Jersey’s Paper Mill Playhouse last fall.
Bradley Cooper continues to sell out the Booth Theatre, where his revival of The Elephant Man, directed by Scott Ellis, continues to do above-capacity business in previews; that show opens December 7. The announcement that Sting will take over a major role in his freshman musical can only mean good news for the struggling The Last Ship. The show took in $497,208, down $40K from last week and barely making 40% of its $1.2 million gross potential at the Neil Simon, according to figures released by the trade group Broadway League.

Last week’s big opening, of a revival of Edward Albee’s A Delicate Balance headlined by Glenn Close, John Lithgow and Lindsay Duncan, drew wildly divergent reviews but solid returns in the form of full houses (with many seats comped for critics) and a $746K take. Newcomer Side Show, staged by Bill Condon and also embraced by most of the critics, looks like it will face challenges bringing audiences to the St. James Theatre, where it took in $419K, a drop from the week before probably due to more press comps but still just 41% of its $1 million potential.
Overall, the box office was steady at $26.7 million for 36 shows.
