Santa Monica-based Myriad Pictures has added boxing crime thriller Glass Chin to its AFM roster for all worldwide sales outside the U.S. House of Cards‘ Corey Stoll stars in the neo-noir Tribeca Film Festival entry as an ex-pugilist desperate to get back in the game who starts training a young fighter and gets involved in crooked dealings with a local restaurateur (Billy Crudup). Yul Vazquez (Kill the Messenger, Captain Phillips), Marin Ireland (I Am Legend, Hope Springs), and Kelly Lynch (The Jacket, Charlie’s Angels) also star. Noah Buschel (The Missing Person) wrote and directed the film which is produced by Louise Runge and Samantha Housman of ONEZERO Films, Susan Stover, and Sara Woodhatch. Lois J. Drabkin is exec producer. Myriad’s Audrey Delaney, SVP of Marketing & Acquisition, negotiated the deal with Cinetic on behalf of the filmmakers.
Oscar winner Chris Cooper is set to play J.D. Salinger in Coming Through The Rye, from first-time feature helmer Jim Sadwith. Stan Erdreich, Teddy Grennan and Sadwith are producing the coming-of-age story about two teenagers (Alex Wolff and Stefania Owen) who search for the reclusive Catcher In The Rye author in 1969. Based on Sadwith’s own quest to find Salinger and his encounters with the writer, the story is about a sensitive boy, a quirky girl and the road they travel to find not only Salinger but also friendship and the truth about themselves. Angel Grace Productions is giving international buyers a first look at the project at AFM this week.
Two-time Oscar nominee Naomi Watts is set to star in Shut In, a psychological thriller that Luc Besson’s EuropaCorp will finance, co-produce and distribute. Production will start next year in Europe on the pic directed by Farren Blackburn from the Black List screenplay by Christina Hodson. EuropaCorp will release Shut In domestically through RED and kick off international sales at AFM. Lava Bear Films developed and packaged the film.
Shout! Factory has acquired animated pic Maya The Bee – Movie for North America. Studio 100 Film’s Maya is based on the book series first published more than 100 years ago. Shout! Factory plans a strategic rollout in select theaters, on VOD and SVOD and via electronic sellthrough, television and in all packaged media through Shout! Factory Kids in 2015. Maya The Bee – Movie started rolling out internationally in September with success in Europe and elsewhere. It’s a German-Australian co-production of Studio 100 Media and Buzz Studios in association with Flying Bark Productions. Directed by Alexs Stadermann, it is produced by Patrick Elmendorff and Thorsten Wegener, Jim Ballantine and Barbara Stephen.
Breakthrough Entertainment has sold the U.S., UK, Australia and New Zealand rights to The Drownsman to Anchor Bay Entertainment. Chad Archibald directs the horror-suspense feature about a girl who almost drowns in a lake. Unable to describe what happened to her underwater, she begins to develop an abnormal fear of water and attempts to shut out the world around her. But her fear intensifies when she begins to be haunted by the vision of an evil figure. When friends stage an intervention in a desperate attempt to help, they open a floodgate to a dark place where none of them is safe. Breakthrough is handling worldwide distribution, and also serves as executive producer. The Drownsman is a production of Black Fawn Films. Written by Cody Calahan (Antisocial) and Archibald, it stars Michelle Mylett (Antisocial), Caroline Korycki, Gemma Bird Matheson, Sydney Kondruss, Clare Bastable and Ry Barrett (Neverlost).
